I tried 3 of the most popular meal delivery Services so you don't have to.....

So I am super busy.  Like working 4 jobs busy.  Between seeing private clients, teaching yoga, seeing private clients in my wellness practice and doing weekend sound healing journeys I don't have a ton of free time.  So any kind of life hack that is good for my body and saves me time is like nirvana for me.  I also spend a lot of time recommending things to my clients that they can outsource.  As a general rule, anything that you don't love to do but can afford to outsource is an easy win in my book.  Enter meal delivery services...I've always been a good cook, but deciding what to cook and shopping for the ingredients.  I had been seeing all these advertisements for these meal delivery services where they send you all the ingredients and the recipe and you do the cooking.  I finally jumped on the bandwagon last November and have been testing out different services ever since.  Below is my quick and dirty review using some key criteria of what I liked and disliked about each service.  I don't have a one size fits all favorite because I think each of them could be better for some people than others for different reasons.  Enjoy the review and comment with any other services you have tried.

Blue Apron

Cost: $59.94-69.92 (per week)

High Level Review

  • Freshness Level: Excellent
  • Taste: Excellent
  • Time to Prepare: Moderate
  • Variety available: Moderate
  • Ability to Customize: Minimal
  • Accommodates Dietary Restrictions: Minimal
  • Organic: No
  • Sustainable and locally sourced: Yes

Comments: Overall I loved the flavor of Blue Apron over all the others.  However, I did feel like it tended to be a bit heavy on the things I try to avoid (Dairy, gluten, etc) and I didn't love that I could only choose 2 meat and one vegetarian dish every time (see my comments on Hello Fresh).  The main drawback to this service was the time to prepare, lots of chopping and mixing of ingredients, but that made for a much fresher tasting meal in the end.

Green Chef

Cost: $60.00-89.00 (per week)

High Level Review

  • Freshness Level: Moderate
  • Taste: Moderate
  • Time to Prepare: Excellent
  • Variety available: Excellent
  • Ability to Customize: Excellent
  • Accommodates Dietary Restrictions: Excellent
  • Organic: Yes
  • Sustainable and locally sourced: Yes

Comments: Overall I was amazed by the ability to customize these meal plans and meet my dietary restrictions.  However, the quality of the ingredients was never as fresh as the other two services, mostly I think because they pre-chop their veggies and pre-make a lot of their sauces.

Hello Fresh

Cost: $59.94 (per week)

High Level Review

  • Freshness Level: Excellent
  • Taste: Excellent
  • Time to Prepare: Excellent
  • Variety available: Excellent
  • Ability to Customize: Excellent
  • Accommodates Dietary Restrictions: Moderate
  • Organic: No
  • Sustainable and locally sourced: Yes

Comments: This one I think combines the best of both Green Chef and Blue Apron.  The quality is really good but I still don't have to do a ton of prep.  Everything comes nicely boxed for each meal so there's no danger of forgetting an ingredient in the fridge.  They also offer you the ability to pick from six different dishes in any combination you want and have the ability to do an upgraded "premium" meal for just $5-10 more.
